AP 3D Design - Year at a Glance
Prerequisite: Art 2, Art 3 or permission from AP Instructor after a Portfolio Review
Course Content
The AP Art and Design course framework is composed of course skills, big ideas, essential questions and enduring understandings, learning objectives, and essential knowledge. AP Art and Design skill categories delineate overarching understandings central to the study and practice of art and design. Each of the three skill categories consists of skills that encompass foundational to advanced learning over the span of the course. Students need to develop, practice, and apply these skills in a variety of contexts.
The AP 3D Design course framework is made up of three big ideas:
• Big Idea 1: Investigate materials, processes, and ideas.
• Big Idea 2: Make art and design.
• Big Idea 3: Present art and design.
Course Skills
The AP Art and Design framework included in the course and exam description outlines distinct skills that students should practice throughout the year—skills that will help them learn to think and act like artists. Skills 2 and 3 are specifically assessed in both portfolio sections (Sustained Investigation and Selected Works).
Skill Description
1. Inquiry and Investigation Investigate materials, processes, and ideas.
2. Making Through Practice, Experimentation, and Revision Make works of art and design by practicing, experimenting, and revising. 3. Communication and Reflection Communicate ideas about art and design.
AP 3-D Art and Design Portfolio
This portfolio is designated for work that focuses on the use of three-dimensional (3-D) elements and principles of art and design, including point, line, shape, plane, layer, form, volume, mass, occupied/unoccupied space, texture, color, value, opacity, transparency, time, unity, variety, rhythm, movement, proportion, scale, balance, emphasis, contrast, repetition, connection, juxtaposition, and hierarchy. Students should consider how materials, processes, and ideas can be used to make work that involves space and form.
Students can work with any materials, processes, and ideas. Figurative or nonfigurative sculpture, architectural models, metal work, ceramics, glasswork, installation, performance, assemblage, and 3-D fabric/fiber arts are among the possibilities for submission. Still images from videos or film are accepted. Composite images may be submitted.
Portfolio Requirements
Sustained Investigation – Section 1
15 digital images; some may be details or process images | 60% of portfolio score Students will submit images and writing to document their inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision:
• A minimum of 15 digital images that include works of art and design and process documentation.
• Typed responses to prompts, providing information about the questions that guided their investigation and how they practiced, experimented, and revised, guided by their questions.
Selected Works – Section 2 5 works | 40% of portfolio score Students will submit works of art and design and writing to demonstrate skillful synthesis of materials, processes and ideas:
• 5 physical works or high quality reproductions with written responses on paper identifying the materials, processes and ideas used;
• Works may come from the Sustain Investigation section, but they do not have to.
